Normal Genealogy Records

Normal genealogy records take researchers into the heart of central Illinois, where the town sits right next to Bloomington in McLean County. With a population near 53,000, Normal is home to Illinois State University, which also houses the IRAD depository for 14 counties in the region. Vital records go through the McLean County Clerk in Bloomington. Normal does not keep its own birth, death, or marriage files. What makes Normal stand out for genealogy is the IRAD archive on the ISU campus, which holds historical records that date back well before the county clerk started filing. Searching Normal genealogy means tapping into both the county clerk and this university archive system.

McLean County Clerk Vital Records

The McLean County Clerk handles all vital records for Normal. The office is at 115 E. Washington St., Room 102, Bloomington, IL 61702. Call (309) 888-5190 for the vital records line. Normal is just a short drive from the clerk office in Bloomington, so walk-in service is easy to use.

McLean County has one of the earlier birth record collections in Illinois. Birth records start from 1860, which is well ahead of the 1877 date that most Illinois counties use. Death records go back to 1878. Marriage records reach all the way to 1831. The office keeps card indexes for births from 1860 to 1940, deaths from 1878 to 1973, and marriages from 1831 to 1997. These indexes let you check if a record exists before you pay for a copy. That saves both time and money.

Fees for Normal genealogy records through the McLean County Clerk run higher than some other parts of the state. A genealogical birth record costs $30. Marriage records cost $28. Death records are $35. Each additional copy is $10. Under the Vital Records Act (410 ILCS 535), genealogical copies are available for births 75 or more years old, deaths 20 or more years old, and marriages 50 or more years old.

Note: A fire on June 19, 1900 damaged some McLean County records, so not all early files survived intact.

Normal Free Birth Index Online

McLean County offers a free online birth index that covers records from 1860 to 1915. This is one of the better free genealogy tools in central Illinois. You can search by name and see basic index data at no cost. If you find a match, you can then request a full copy from the clerk. It is a quick way to check whether a Normal ancestor's birth was recorded in the county before you commit to a paid request.

The McLean County genealogical research page covers the full process for getting records. It explains what types of records are available, fee amounts, and how to submit requests by mail or in person. Walk-in service is faster. Mail requests take longer, but the county clerk is usually quicker than the state. The Illinois Department of Public Health also holds Normal birth and death records from 1916 forward, and the IDPH genealogy page explains that process. IDPH requests cost $10 but take about 12 weeks.

IRAD Archives at Illinois State University

Normal has a unique advantage for genealogy research. The IRAD depository at Illinois State University sits right in town. Call (309) 452-6027 for hours and to ask about record availability. This depository serves McLean County along with 13 other central Illinois counties: Champaign, DeWitt, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kankakee, Livingston, Logan, Marshall, Piatt, Tazewell, Vermilion, and Woodford. If your family had ties to any of those counties, you can check those records at the same location.

IRAD holds historical local government records that include older vital records, land deeds, probate files, naturalization records, and court documents. Research in person is free. You can also submit up to two names per mail or phone request at no charge. The Local Records Act (50 ILCS 205) gives the legal authority for preserving these records through the IRAD system. If a Normal record is too old or too fragile for the county clerk to handle, it may have been sent here for safe keeping.
